What's affected? BSD services as seen from the Hospital network
Who's affected? All users using machines on the Hospital network
When will it be available? May 23, 2006, 18:00
The problem was caused by a faulty route to 165.68.0.0 (hospital network).
The best route to 165.68.0.0 on one of the NSIT border routers was over
Internet 2. Any traffic that passed through that router destined
for 165.68.0.0 would try to go out to Internet2 and then to the hospital
network. NSIT has changed the router to not accept routes to 165.68.0.0
from Internet2. As of 6pm on May 23rd traffic from subnet 128.135.75.0/24
to 165.68.0.0/16 appears to route properly.

What's affected? Email
Who's affected? NSIT email users
When will it be available? 2005.02.27.0600
As you know, NSIT will be rolling out a new email system, cMail, over this
coming weekend. In order to finalize the transfer of mail from the old
system to the new, email will be UNAVAILABLE from 9 PM Friday, February
25th, until 6 AM Sunday, February 27th (33 hours total). During this time,
it will not be possible to check mail on NSIT systems using webmail, pine,
Eudora, or any other mail client. Additionally, off-campus users will not
be able to send mail out through smtp.uchicago.edu.
Incoming mail will be queued and delivered as soon as the cMail migration
is complete.
Two additional notes for Webmail users:
First, Webmail filters will not be migrated to cMail. If you use filters
for sorting mail, you will need to create them anew on cMail.
Second, NSIT will migrate Webmail addressbooks to cMail. Nonetheless, we
do recommend that Webmail users back up their address books before Friday,
in case something does go wrong. This can be done using the
"Import/Export" feature of the Webmail Address Book interface.
For up-to-date information on cMail, see
http://support.uchicago.edu/cmail/

IS Security Incident Notice: 2/3/2005
The past few days have seen a significant rise in suspicious activity on
the University network. Working closely with NSIT security staff, we are
now aware that a large number of workstations on campus (including the BSD)
have been broken into and compromised. The workstations are in turn being
used to launch attacks against other workstations across the network. This
poses a serious and present threat to the security of our systems. Of
these compromised workstations, a significant number are supported by
BSDIS.
Remediating these machines will require that we rebuild them. Our efforts
will initially be focused on those machines which were Asset-Tagged by
BSDIS as per an inventory completed this past year. BSDIS personnel will be
beginning this process today, Feb. 3rd. For the next two days, normal
operations at the BSDIS Help Desk will be shut down. Our focus will be on
remediating and preparing affected systems against future compromises.
We have arranged with NSIT to have affected machines remain on the network
until Friday evening. Affected users will be contacted individually.
If you have any questions or comments, please call the Help Desk at 2-2056,
or check http://help.bsd.uchicago.edu for routine updates. We are
coordinating our efforts with NSIT and with other BSD computing groups.
